History has been used by politicians, special interest groups and others for propaganda throughout the ages. History is the most misunderstood subject and is used to manipulate people into war, harbor prejudices and continue practices that are not good for society.
Once again, Theresa, beautiful post. If you liked "All Quiet on the Western Front", I advise you to watch a film called "Grave of the Fireflies". It is a japanese animated movie about two japanese children who struggle to survive during World War II. It's beautiful!
To answer the question you asked on my blog: as for the owl, I really didn't do anything special: I simply uploaded it as my header. When you do it, you have to click on an option that says something like "Instead of the title and description". The title of the blog is a part of the image, I found it was the only way to make it look good on blogger. To write text on an image I use a litte program called Irfanview; it's free and very helpful. The only thing to celebrate about World War I was that it ended. That conflict was the most dreadful collective mistake of the west, ever, not least because it led to so many others. But the memory of its ending was certainly worth a beer. . .or three.
