History Resources on the Web

I feel like it has been forever since I have blogged.  A teething baby, scrubbing toilets and other domestic duties have kept me from writing.  While the apple pie I made was delicious, a finished blog post is more rewarding.


In a previous life I worked as a librarian at Indiana University, Purdue University, Columbus (IUPUC).  Besides being a mouthful, I realized  most students cannot research a topic to save their life.  Since term paper season is upon us, I have decided to share my favorite history websites.


Project Gutenberg:  Project Gutenberg offers free ebooks that can be downloaded to your computer, ipod or Kindle.  Since Project Gutenberg offers books no longer subject to copyright, many were written before 1926.  Primary sources, such as "Thomas Jefferson's Memoirs" and the "State of the Union Address" by George Washington are available.

The Library of Congress, American Memory Project:  This website contains links to some of the United States' greatest documents.  The highlight of the collection is the first draft of Thomas Jefferson's "Declaration of Independence," which includes the statement made by Jefferson about the evils of slavery.

British History Online:  Contains primary and secondary sources of all things British from the Middle Ages to the Present.  You can search local laws, Acts of Parliament, taxation records and personal diaries.  Not only is this site useful for term papers, but for genealogical research as well.
