History has been used by politicians, special interest groups and others for propaganda throughout the ages. History is the most misunderstood subject and is used to manipulate people into war, harbor prejudices and continue practices that are not good for society.
War isn't my thing. Blood, guts and the thought of death never appealed to me. Instead, I focus on other aspects the religious and social aspects of history. Oddly enough when I tell people I majored in history, they always ramble on about this battle or that. Memorizing battles isn't history. Instead, history comes from the individuals who lived it and their interpretations. For the past couple weeks, however, I've wanted to write another article on World War I. Not about the battles, but the people. The blog "Tea at Trianon," has a wonderful article about the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles, desperately seeking a peace treaty with the Allies during World War I. Unfortunately, Charles failed in his gallant attempt and "the rest they say, is history."
Goodness, this post moved me to tears. Granted I'm hormonal today and would cry at a greeting card commercial. That's not the point. El Jefe, a blogger from Texas, wrote a touching tribute to all veterans and breathes life into the senselessness of World War I.
While the Allies and Germany had agreed to a peace treaty earlier that morning, fighting didn't stop until the appointed time on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month. Many soldiers died in these precious hours and more would die in the days to come. Sadly, this was a fitting tribute to a war that should never have been fought in the first place.
